About Skylar
Skylar has been an aspiring artist since she was a young girl. She started out with painting and drawing and is now interested in ceramics and sculpture. She loves learning new processes and experimenting with different mediums. Her main inspiration comes from the process of making art and letting ideas come to her while she works. She dives into her femininity and combines that with abstract expression.
Now, she works as a pottery instructor at Coibri Pottery Studio in San Jose, CA. She finished her undergraduate program and obtained a Bachelor in Fine Art. Skylar exhibits in local galleries such as the Blue Cat Gallery which featured some of her pottery and paintings. She aspires to own a studio to continue her artistic career. Additionally, she hopes to become a ceramic/sculpting professor someday.
Artist Statement
I use my personal emotions and my understanding of femininity as inspirations throughout my work. These broad topics allow exploration of a wide variety of areas: life, death, mourning, memory, personal experiences, feminist topics, and gender. I find that feminine experiences can go unseen by many, and I like to introduce work relating to those experiences. In doing so, I feel I am giving a voice to the capabilities of the female body and the essence of being a woman.
I also focus on how my art makes people feel. During the creation of my works, I enjoy being able to explore my own emotions. I believe this personal connection can be seen and understood by my viewers in a way that enriches their own viewing experience. Often, my work provokes diverse types of emotions in viewers; this builds a connection between them and the work.
I use a variety of mediums and substrates to create paintings, sculptures, ceramics, mixed media pieces, and prints. I mainly focus on abstract artwork because I believe this aesthetic gives the audience more interpretive leeway. I am heavily influenced by the well-known artists’ Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso. I appreciate their abstraction, distortion, and color use, and I incorporate that into my imagery. In many of my pieces, color is what stands out most; I love to use color to convey a mood. Additionally, I use imagery from nature and organic forms in my work. I prefer an organic yet odd biomorphic abstraction in my art as if it has come from a different planet. I incorporate outlandish textures in my pieces that attract the audience. I like to let my ideas fully form while making a piece, by reacting to the process as I go. Not having a set plan lets the piece form organically.
